What are mattress topper pads and overlays?

Topper pads and overlays are foam mattress pads that range anywhere from 1” to 4" thick and are used primarily to find some comfort in an older mattress. Basically if your mattress is in fairly decent shape you can save money by looking at a quality Latex or memory Foam mattress topper instead of buying a complete sleep system. This method is much preferred over buying a cheaper mattress with a “pillow top” for the extra cushioning. Unfortunately, most pillow tops use inexpensive foams and other materials that compress fairly quickly. Then your options are limited because the pillow top is attached to the bed, compressed and not providing the support you were looking for. But if you buy a high quality topper like our Talalay Latex or Sensus Memory Foam toppers instead, you get a premiere cushioning layer for less than the pillow top mattress. And years down the road, if your topper does need to be replaced, you can simply replace the topper with a new one rather than buying a whole new bed.

Is 2" or 3" of this material enough to cushion my body and relieve pressure points?

You wouldn’t think that a 2" or 3" pad could make much of a difference. But these Talalay Latex and Sensus Memory Foam topper pads and overlays are very different from ordinary foam pads. In the first place, a twin size weighs about 15 - 25 pounds and a queen around 25 - 35 pounds. That's because the material is 4 to 10 times denser than ordinary foams, so you get a lot more material in these pads than in an ordinary pad. In fact, to get the same amount of cushioning, you would need to have 8" - 15" of ordinary "egg crate" padding.

What depth pad should you choose?

I guess it really depends on your feel you’re looking for and your weight. I weigh 180lbs and feel that the 2" thickness works well. It really gives most people the benefits of a memory foam pad (better sleep, less aches and pains, etc). The 3" pad is somewhat more luxurious, and the 4” even more so. I would suggest a 3" or 4” for someone who is a bit heavier, or if you are really looking for a soft, luxurious feel.
Will your topper help alleviate my arthritis, relieve my back pain, reduce my tossing and turning, or just help me sleep better?

Mattress toppers aren’t the cure for these health issues, but many of our customers and friends have told us that these mattress topper pads and overlays have helped them ease certain pain and or sleep problems. The toppers allow them to sleep longer, awaken fewer times during the night, ease back pain and make them feel refreshed. Others just like it because it's so comfortable. Being that these mattress topper pads are portable in a sense, you can take them camping or on a long trip where sleep support is at a minimum. The only way to know if either of these pads will work for you is to try one out on your own bed. That's why I offer a 30 day period on Cloud 9 Air Mattress Beds topper pads. That way you can try one for yourself and then let us know how it works for you.

Is it any different than those eggcrate foam pads?

Yes, it's very different. This type of foam is very dense, from 4 to 10 times denser than the ordinary egg crate pads. This means much more cushioning for your body and a much longer life for your pad. You would need 6 - 10 times thicker egg crate pads to equal the cushioning found in our Talalay Latex and Sensus Memory Foam topper pads. The extra density of these mattress topper pads and the quality craftsmanship provide the consumer with a lasting product and a warranty to match. Compare that to a standard "egg crate" pad which often starts to breakdown after just a short time, and are much less supportive. Although there is some relief from the egg crate foam, it certainly can’t match the health and sleep related properties of a quality Latex or Memory Foam mattress topper. Quality Latex and memory Foam is the only foam that also molds to your body - to support it correctly and reduce painful pressure points. This is why memory or visco-elastic foam, has been used in hospitals not only help prevent patients from getting bed sores but also to heal their bed sores. "Egg crate" foam is an inexpensive way to try to make your bed more comfortable. But if you want to find a pad that will actually help ease your painful back and joints or help with sleep problems, the Cloud 9 Air Mattress Beds Topper is a much superior way to go and is very effective.

Does memory foam feel different than ordinary foam pads?

Yes, when you squeeze memory foam, it feels so different, as though there were a gel in the foam. If you press your hand in the foam, it leaves an imprint that slowly disappears as the foam returns to its normal shape. And when you lie down on the foam, it molds to the curves of your body and cushions you in a very comforting way. It almost feels like you are floating on water. Usually when you sleep on your back you feel an opening at your lower back, but with memory foam it fills in and supports the curve in their lower backs.
How long does do your Latex and memory Foam Toppers last last?

Due to the manufacturing processes and because this foam is so dense, it lasts for years. That is why all our Memory Foam mattress topper pads come with a 10 year manufacturer's warranty. Our Talalay Latex mattress topper pads come with a 15 year manufacturer's warranty.

Is the Cloud 9 Air Mattress Beds memory foam topper pad hot to sleep on?

Foam, in general, is hotter to sleep on than cotton. But although our Sensus memory foam has finer cells that may inhibit heat to dissipate, there doesn’t seem to be any noticeable issues with heat.  However the benefit of our finer cells produced by VPF manufacturing means Sensus outperforms existing viscoelastic memory foam mattresses in consistency, quality, and shape-conforming comfort. Sensus memory foam is fluidly responsive to a broader range of temperatures than other viscoelastic products. The result is a smoother, more gradual shift in firmness that allows sleepers to change position without hitting an uncomfortable barrier of hard, non-responsive memory foam. Sensus has finer cells than other viscoelastic memory foams, giving it a softer, more luxurious feel than competitive products.

My bed is pretty old. Will the Cloud 9 Air Mattress Beds topper pad make it more comfortable?

Our Talalay Latex and Memory Foam toppers do a great job of giving an uncomfortable firm mattress, that’s in decent shape a much more comfortable, personal feel. If your mattress isn't in good shape, IE. It has body impressions, uncomfortable lumps or more than 8 years old, etc... It’s probably more important to concentrate your money on a new mattress rather than a Latex or Memory Foam mattress topper.

Will my current sheets fit over my bed if I use a topper pad?

It really depends on how thick your bed is and how deep your sheets are. Generally sheets average 10” deep, if your sheets are really snug now, you may have to buy deeper sheets. However if you have some room to begin with, your sheets may be just fine. In fact, most people seem to be able to continue using their current sheets. If you’re not sure, I suggest placing an extra sheet just around the mattress topper pad or overlay and then placing it on top of your mattress as it is. It won’t move around much and you can at least try a mattress topper pad without having to buy new sheets.

How does the Cloud 9 Air Mattress Beds topper pad compare to the overlays made by Tempur-Pedic ®?
The immediate difference between a Cloud 9 Air Mattress Beds topper pads and a new Tempur-Pedic® mattress or Tempur-Pedic® 3" overlay, is PRICE! You can achieve your desired comfort level and get a Quality product for a fraction of the price that you would pay for a Tempur-Pedic®.

The price difference is fairly large when comparing the actual products. Tempur-Pedic's® foam is a bit denser than our topper pads - 5.35lb/cu foot density vs. our pad's 5.1lb/cu ft density. Density is measured on what a cube of each material would weigh, where the cube was a foot in each dimension. (Note: most regular store bought foam topper pads often weigh from 1/2 to 1 pound per cubic foot, which shows the High Quality of these visco-elastic foams, they truly are at the top of the industry!)

So the density difference is slight, but since higher density foam does utilize a bit more raw material and Tempur-Pedic® gets their material from all around the world, this might account for a bit of the price difference between Tempur-Pedic® and Cloud 9 Air Mattress Beds' topper pads. Cloud 9 Air Mattress Beds only uses Foamex, Sensus™ a highly trusted industry name and guaranteed 100% Made in the USA. This is definitely one main reason that saves our customer’s some money in the end. But not only do we carry a 5.1 lb/cu ft topper, we also offer our Cloud 9 Air Mattress Beds memory foam mattress toppers in densities of 3, 4, and 5 pounds and thicknesses of 1, 2, 3, and 4 inches giving you the ability to find the exact comfort feeling you’re looking for.

How does the Cloud 9 Air Mattress Beds Mattress Topper pad compare to the inexpensive memory foam pad I saw on television?

It is very difficult to compare these pads to the Cloud 9 Air Mattress Beds Talalay Latex and Sensus Memory Foam mattress topper pad since they come in so many densities, thicknesses, and cuts (cut flat like our pad, cut in an egg crate cut, or cut in a zone pattern). Many of these pads aren't as dense as our pad, and this can make a big difference in comfort and durability. And to make it worse, many of these less dense pads actually cost more (the cost of advertising really drives up the costs of these lower quality pads). I personally feel that a flat cut pad, either Latex or Memory Foam is preferable to a zone cut or egg crate cut pad. Talalay Latex and Sensus Memory Foam both naturally conform to your body and provide real skeletal alignment and pressure relieving properties, that just doesn’t exist with an egg crate or zone cut (whose sole purpose is to soften certain areas of foam).

Are there instructions for how I should unpack my Latex or memory Foam Mattress topper or pillow and care and use instructions for these products as well??

  • Unpacking Your Memory Foam Product

Most mattress toppers are machine rolled and compressed for efficient delivery. These Memory Foam Mattress Pads and Talaly Latex  Mattress Pads are made of the highest quality Visco Elastic Foam and Talalay Latex Foam available. So, being folded and or machine rolled will not affect its performance, but it may require 24 to 72 hours to regain its full shape.

Do not use scissors or any sharp object when removing the plastic cover. Exercise care and remove the plastic cover by hand. Gently pull the compressed product to unroll it. If you notice a slight odor when the package is opened, it is normal for “fresh foam” and will fade away in couple of days. Gently separate the layers by using a slow, steady, uniform pulling motion. Caution must be exercised, to avoid tearing the foam. Once unrolled, allow it to recover naturally before making up your bed. Simply center the Memory Foam Topper directly on top of the mattress and cover both with the same fitted sheet. If you have an overstuffed or pillow top mattress, you may require deep pocket sheets to cover the Memory Foam Mattress Pad.

Note: Due to our manufacturing processes, the Talalay Process for the Latex and the VPF process for the Sensus Memory Foam, very little if any odor should be appearent. If you notice an odor, try following the tips for airing out mattress toppers.

  • Care and Use

Cleaning: Simply spot wash by hand with warm water and mild detergent. Rinse and gently wring out. Allow product to air dry prior to use. Do not machine wash or dry.

Safety: Fire safety precautions should always be followed. You may use an electric blanket, but be sure it is in good working condition and UL approved with no visible wear or frayed wiring.

Tips for Airing out the Mattress Topper Pads

- You can air out new Mattress Topper Pads in a spare room with the windows open for fresh air. Turn the mattress topper pad accordingly to air both sides.

- Mattress Topper Pads seem to air out more quickly with a fan blowing on them, so place the pad over a chair or railing with the fan blowing on it, and turn the pad over in the morning to air out both sides equally. This takes care of the odor, for the most part, within a day or two and then it should be ready to go on your bed.

- After you begin to use the Topper Pad, you can take care of any residual odor by airing it out in the same manner during the day and then putting the mattress pad back on your bed at night. In our experience, this takes care of any such residual odor in a few days. A less desirable option is airing the Topper Pad outside for a day or two, but you need to be careful about any dirt or moisture outside that may damage the Topper Pad.

- For your pillow, you might want to roll it up and release it, this will help alleviate any odor. Obviously you can air them out as described above as well. If you still have any remaining odor, try putting a laundry sheet (Bounce Sheet) between the pillow and your pillowcase or liner, this will help make any odor less noticeable until the odor is completely gone.
